Frustrating Is...

Frustrating Is...

(1) Waking up 6AM to post and not being able to because your browser wont let you upload pictures...

(2) Reinstalling four browsers because you think you have a virus because you can't upload pictures...

(3) Having Norton 360 tell you you don't have a virus and not being able to upload pictures...

(4) Wondering why your browsers keep freezing when diagnostics say there is nothing wrong with your laptop...

(5) Being told that there are no new updates for your computer because your computer is up to date...

(6) Still not being able to share your amazing day yesterday because you can't upload any of the 101 photographs you froze your bahookies off in Manhattan to capture just before sundown...

(7) Sitting at someone else's computer because you have to post your amazing day but are now too frustrated to talk about it (LOL). ;-)

I am going jogging. It's 25 degrees but I am going anyway... I need to clear my head. Maybe when I get back I'll tell you about my brief visit to TBN to request doing an interview in January to show you the Trinity Broadcast Theater off of Union Square. We are talking serious eye candy folks. That building was designed and built in 1869. It's a major landmark.

Oooooooo... look. It uploaded a picture. Maybe I wont go jogging after all (LOL). I'm going to go out to collect more eye candy and shall return to do another post to introduce you guys to TBN later. I have to get rid of my frustrations so I can write a proper post about Union Square and the gorgeous buildings surrounding the park there. I have lots of eye candy (LOL). I want to make sure TBN makes it into my Year In Review photo-montage. ;-)

The Ambassadors of Chaos Are Coming To RainCamp...

Carolyn Tann-Starr 2009

The Ambassadors of Chaos Are Coming To RainCamp...

I love New York and RainCamp is coming to NYC on January 12th, 2010. The Ambassadors of Chaos are coming out to play and spend the day with some of our fave Rainers. I am looking forward to enjoying this major real estate tech event at the Marriott Marquis. It will be my first RainCamp and second Inman. I already have my eye on the Atrium and will be blogging live from the Sushi Bar (LOL). ;-)

I am still after Hubby for the Platinum Pass (LOL). I would love to wander down to Washington DC and any other East Coast venue that fits in with my little minion schedule. The consensus is in and everyone attending the previous events agree that RainCamp is "packed with great content, presentations, and some of the most useful and applicable ideas and processes that you can implement immediately into your Social Media, Networking, and Blogging Business Strategy and Plan." How cool is that? Very. :-)

I love the location AR has selected. I have been to the Marriott Marquis for several stellar events and if you go you are going to be in for a real treat. For more information and to sign up for RainCamp select this link.

How To Sell Your Creative Writing And Monetize Your Blog

Carolyn Tann-Starr 2009

How To Sell Your Creative Writing And Monetize Your Blog

I spent the day creating hot links in my PDF newsletter. I like to link back to my blogs (and a few businesses that I enjoy) while wondering which friends I am going to high-jack for interviews. I need to do a minimum of 24 during the interim of 2010. Two per month are very do-able. You have 20 days to get each one done, so do at least one page a day.Your deadlines will depend upon which digital press you decide to use if you are going to create print publications. You will still need a schedule if you are only concerned with digital downloads of your work. Your e-mail distribution needs to be on a regular schedule or your readers will abandon you for a more consistent writer.

The cool thing about creating a PDF newsletter is the fact that anyone can do it. It is just as easy as writing a blog post and you can even use your old blog posts in there if you re-edit and update it into something more relevant and timely LINKING BACK to the original post. People enjoy blogs that learn and grow and a newsletter can show off the evolution of a writer if you do it right. It will bring some of your best writing back into the forefront of their minds because your hot links will send the reader where you want them to go.

If you didn't write it, do NOT touch another writer's work. This is YOUR project concerning your writing and it is an opportunity to showcase your talent while making some money with a PDF e-Publication because (1) you can offer a subscription service that (a) links back to all your stuff and (b) links back to the people who pay you for advertising there AND (2) If your readers share your PDF with their friends after they purchase it from you (a) it's free advertising for your brand and (b) it may lead to more subscribers and people contacting you about advertising fees.

My third point? You can submit your PDF as a file for a digital printer to produce your magazine from if you build it up to enough pages. Hard copy circulations make you one step closer to becoming an editor and/or journalist. If you have talented friends, now would be a good time to get them writing for you. Do something new for 2010. Monetize your blog.

People contact me by e-mail all the time regarding advertising on my sites and within the pages of my PDF. I say NO more often than not because I only want advertisements that fit my quirky disposition and/or are from businesses that I actually like and use. If life is sacred to you why would you accept an ad from an abortion clinic? If you are a mortgage broker, why would you accept an ad from another competitor?

If you are going to make a newsletter and/or magazine you need to decide from day one what type of advertisements you will and wont accept. Reserve the right to say no and just say, "No, thank you..." without a lot of fan fare or elaborate conversations. I would rather create a free ad because I like something rather than accept an ad that I am uncomfortable with because they offer money.

Go make a practice PDF. If you own MS Office 2007 it has a "Create PDF" button so you have no excuse not to create them. If you don't own any software that creates PDFs you may want to rethink that and invest in a Microsoft or Adobe purchase. Once you do, you can save your current blog content and reformat that puppy into electronic book form. Creating eBooks can create multiple streams of revenue for you. Try it. You may discover that you like it. :-)

If you don't own the 89th Annual Edition of the 2010 Writer's Market, you may want to invest in that as well. You will need someplace to send your writing, eh?

Designing Across Media...

Designing Across Media...

I am trying to figure out how to create visually rich content to engage the shorties while I work on the year in review. We have a lot of new tools to use and Stephen has spent the better part of 30 minutes counting buses (LOL). It appears I may have to do a school post to make him happy. The cool thing about having an outside office is you can work from anywhere. :-)

Noah likes the park pictures and we're sorting the shots I took while in Albany. The legislative buildings are a real treat. This file is starting to look like the East Coast in review across the seasons (LOL). We are going to arrange music for the project and see what new thing we can do with animating some floating titles.

Gotta go. We are going out on another eye candy run. They have their fave toys and they like playing TomTom. :-)

My next post? My Christmas lunch with Susana at Piu Bello. I promised Candice I would update my food porn but I got distracted and never did get around to blogging live from another fave foodie paradise spot. I apologize for being remiss in my duties Candyland. My next post is for you, BloggyAnna. Will call you later, of course (LOL).

Adobe CS4 Master Collection Is Amazing... I'm Speechless... Seriously...

Carolyn Tann-Starr 2009

Adobe CS4 Master Collection Is Amazing... I'm Speechless... Seriously...

And to think I only wanted a RainCamp Platinum Pass and Photoshop for Christmas (LMAO)... What the hell was I thinking? This collection is amazing... I am such a software junkie. My family and gal pals went way beyond what I could ever have imagined.

Nothing says "I Love You" more to a Google Whore than tools to make you oogle in Google (ROTFLMAO).

When I said I had e-Books to create they took me very seriously. I have been messing with this software since 6:40AM this morning. I'm hooked. Obsessed even (LOL). I'm working on the year in review as a visual recap for Localism and I am speechless...

The Master Collection is simply amazing... Too bad I have no idea how to work it all (LOL). The flip side is I shall be in Tutorial Hell for at least a month, but it will be well worth it. BTW, I still want my Platinum Pass so Hubby is NOT off the hook for RainCamp (LOL). 2010 should be very interesting now that my fave brick and mortars have upgraded me and sent me on my ActiveWay to blog more efficiently in the Rain with my new Adobe mobile office.

Poor babies... they thought I was on my computer waaaaaay too much before. They have no idea what they have done. I am in Blog Heaven and may start having fantasies about being married to my laptop. Seriously...

Did I mention this software is amazing? It is... I keep using that word because I am speechless (LMAO). ;-)

Running With Your Eyes Closed

Carolyn Tann-Starr 2009

Running With Your Eyes Closed

How do little kids do that? They zip around, map out an area then act as if they have radar (LOL). Dude thinks running with his eyes closed is a super power (LMAO).

Carolyn Tann-Starr 2009

I was waiting for shorty to do his Napoleon pose. That's always fun (LOL).

Carolyn Tann-Starr 2009

Watching Stephen run his version of a marathon around the Planetarium was mad fun. Especially when he closed his eyes and started skipping backwards (LOL). Kids... ya gotta love 'em. They frolic so well... :-)

Carolyn Tann-Starr 2009

Mike and Noah came out to play. We've managed to do Queens, Manhattan, Brooklyn and Staten Island. Will be in the Bronx, then upstate tomorrow. This should be very interesting (LOL). The kids are telling us where to go. Literally (LMAO). I think I like having them be my Christmas TomTom. We should do this more often. :-)

Snow Minions: Merry Christmas

Carolyn Tann-Starr 2009

Merry Christmas

http://www.aish.com  is a beautiful and very useful Jewish website that I enjoy. I have to teach my children how to pray in Hebrew and English so I need all the help that I can get because they are visual learners. Daddy is Jewish so we do a lot of very interesting things. Running a Judeo-Christian household means I am always being exposed to documents written in multiple languages. Ergo, I have intellectual and cultural issues (LOL). Luckily for me I have wonderful friends who help educate me while I am running amuck in my language studies and/or getting stuff translated. A few, like Susana, even help out with my Hebrew and Russian lessons (LOL). It's a lot of fun. I enjoy the research. Life is good... :-)

I am blogging live from Manhattan (New York, NY) because I want to teach Stephen about Christmas and the Messiah. We are going on a buggy ride to eyeball a cathedral and a host of other landmarks. I want him to observe some very interesting sites and I want him to experience the wonder of playing in the snow while visiting a few cultural icons. God is in the details of our intelligent design so I am using life as something the wee ones can relate the concept of God to.

We are going to be collecting a whole bunch of NYC eye candy today. My kids love going on audio/video outings and weather is never an issue. I'm letting Stephen pick the directions we should travel. I have all day to entertain the little minions (LOL). My fave moments so far? Watching him run up and down the Museum of Natural History entrance steps counting them out of order and drooling over Donald Trump's building. My shorty has very good taste. He knows the Unisphere in Flushing Meadows Park and was shocked and excited to see another version of a giant globe in Manhattan (LOL). Letting him pick out horses to buggy ride with is kinda fun too. We are probably going to take the train back down to 59th Street to get our car. We have to pick up Noah and let him make the next set of travel arrangements. The kids are my Christmas TomTom today (LMAO). :-)

While we fool around on Central Park West planning an intimate ski playdate for upstate this weekend I would like to wish you and yours a very Merry Christmas.

The Late Show, My Fave Ladies and Lindys...

The Late Show, My Fave Ladies and Lindys...

The Late Show with David Letterman has some really fun quips. I love fun, quotable moments and I ran across a few in the Lexicon of Stupidity today that had me howling with laughter. I discovered the book earlier this evening while spending some quality time with my brick and mortars. I picked the book up off of my gal pal Susana's shelf while in her office. It was not at all what I expected. With a name like that, how could I not take a look? I'm really glad I did and I plan to go buy it on Saturday at Barnes and Noble when I take the wee people shopping for after Christmas bargain sales. We all know how easily amused I am and this book is major amusement in a very small package (LOL).

I love my friends. I learn a lot from them and sometimes my friends occasionally let me make pit stops to high-jack their Internet so I can check my e-mail, answer clients and peek into the Rain to see what my fave writers are up to. I was working in Queens and Manhattan today and a shift in schedule allowed me to get a brief visit in with my two gym buddies.

Yup. It's true. Even if I go to the gym I habitually try to surround myself with people who are a lot smarter than I am (LOL). These two are real gems with beautiful souls and a couple of my fave ladies when it comes to torturing myself at the New York Sports Club (LMAO). In the business world, Tamara is into underwriting and Susana is into education. A cool fact about our relationship: I have never had a boring conversation with either of them.

They are brilliant. They have also gone on foodie paradise excursions with me and I have mapped out most of the neat places to eat in New York City and shall be blogging about our restaurant selection adventures. I may even start writing about Manhattan night life. Lots of very interesting, intimate little parties going on. Some with stellar views, but I digress... :-)

Carolyn Tann-Starr 2009 Carolyn Tann-Starr 2009

Tamara Isakharov and Susana Isakharova

Sana is always helping me out with my blog and can be quite creative depending upon where we happen to be at any given moment. Chicka has a double masters degree, then went and got another one, so I always pay attention to what she says about my writing. She is great to have around if you need to bounce ideas off of someone (LOL). She's also the one teaching me Russian and very patiently explains all those cultural questions that I have. The cool thing about having friends who speak multiple languages is if I ever need an interpreter all I have to do is hit the speed dial (LOL). Tamara has yet to meet the wee people but Susana sees them all the time. BTW, the little minions adore her and Stephen has a serious crush on Susana that is mad fun to see. Sometimes, my three year old actually blushes. I have to remind myself to stop peeking at him in the rear view mirror when we are all in the car together (LOL).

One of these days we're going to get tickets to the Late Show and chill at Lindy's so I can blog live with my peeps and tease you with food porn. Manhattan rolls 24/7/365 so you can get a lot of business done at very interesting places to meet and eat. Seriously! Have you ever had Lindy's Famous Real New York Cheesecake? That is Spanking-A-Awesome! You have to try that. Add it to your bucket list. :-)

Lindy's has a new location in Manhattan: 825 7th Avenue at 53rd Street. Here's a picture so you don't get lost (LOL). Your mission, should you decide to accept it: Get Late Night tickets and get Lindy's Cheesecake and tell me how you like it. :-)

Live From Starbucks: aSW Conversations

Carolyn Tann-Starr 2009

aSW Conversations

This post caught someone's attention and we're meeting for coffee. Starbucks happens to be one of my fave outside offices when I am on the move. If you have a gift card you can do 2 hours of WiFi for free a day. So I am catching up on my e-mail and at 10:40 my social media meeting will start. We'll be going to an undisclosed location to talk with people I have never met about what I have been up to with all this door knocking. Hmm...

This should be very interesting... Is it a prelude to fight club rules? I have no idea. I only know rule one: never talk about fight club (LOL). Time to get back to door knocking and leveraging my social media relationships.

Never know who reads your blog people... ;-)

Wordy C Answers Her E-mail: Newbie Questions And Answers Regarding AR, ASW And Branding Yourself

"What Drives Your Blog?" was not a rhetorical question (LOL). You, as a writer, need to understand that if you are going to participate in branding yourself you should be in the driver's seat - not your passengers. The goal is to take your readers on a journey and not be taken for a ride in the comment sections. Watch how you moderate your blog because how you respond says a lot about you. :-)

Proactive? Reactive? Proponent? Opponent? Doesn't really make a difference... You control your responses and you control how active your blog is or isn't by the quality of your work, not the quantity. When people read something they like they tend to share links with their friends. Word of mouth buzz is priceless and can not be brought. Lots of drivel does not a blog make... If you are into drivel, then the least you can do is make it very entertaining drivel (LMAO).

Your subject matter is entirely up to you, but when you do decide to tackle it, make sure you do the very best that you can whether serious or silly. Everything has its place and part of branding is not only figuring out where your place is, it is also figuring out where you want to go... If you stop wanting to climb higher in your professional and personal life you will stop trying and become a status quo personality because you mistakenly think you have "arrived" and now must maintain a particular comfort zone.

I remember making a statement over and over as a founder trying to explain why we wanted to grow Club Chaos at a slow, measured pace: Our relationships matter. We took the virtual family approach and made it by invitation because we want to have conversations with each other and make new friends. We didn't know about A Small World (ASW) but now that we are learning about it we discovered we sort of stumbled upon a few parallels regarding the power of social media as a resource to foster personal friendships and not squander those relationships. In Aug 2008 Social Networking Watch interviewed ASW Founder Erik Wachtmeister  who said something very interesting:

SNW Question: "So you’re both an online and off-line community, whereas most of the social networks are purely online?"

ASW Answer: "I would say we are a real community where most social networks are not communities. It’s not like you’re going to meet somebody in Shanghai and say oh you’re also a member of My Space how interesting. Let’s go and grab a beer."

The light-bulb went off because Rainers frequently do grab beers and a host of other foodie paradise treats simply because we meet another Rainer we are comfortable reading. I randomly call people and do food all the time. ActiveRain is a culture and a community and I found myself thinking about that when I was doing some research for Cher's Post about wanting to get an invite to A Small World.

I sat there thinking about the fact that people call and e-mail me when they are flying into NYC all the time. Why? It's because they are comfortable with my blog, have an idea who I am and know I like invading states to visit with Rainers between handling unrelated matters.

Simply saying "ActiveRain" to the right person will open doors just like saying "ASW" does. We have it going on in spades over here and I find myself suddenly determined to get our ActivePeeps over there. If founding AR doesn't make one "culturally influential" then what does? If stellar writers who can move people to organize and act on others behalf like ActiveBob and ActiveBrad do don't qualify, then what does? If lurkers like me who would follow Cheryl Johnson's tech advice or Elizabeth Weintraub's real estate advice along with millions of other readers all over the map don't qualify as culturally influential, then what does? Secretaries and Personal Assistants are there right next to Royalty and the infamous in ASW. Why wouldn't any Rainer worth their salt not want to take a crack at it? Scared? Why? Only a real friend can get you in. Only someone who claims you as a friend can open that door. Your cousin could be there and you wouldn't even know it because you didn't think enough of your own cousin to ask.

This is how people miss their moments. They assume... If you do not understand how AR or ASW works you should do your own research because the information is out there. If you are going to brand yourself as something, don't assume, KNOW. The power of the Rain can open doors if you stop trolling for business long enough to actually make really cool friends. Friends share information on a different level than business associates.

If you are not an expert do not pretend that you are. If you do not know the answer, say you will find out and get back to someone making it very clear that you want to confirm your information before you answer. Nothing ruins a brand and a business relationship faster than getting a reputation for misinformation.

Branding and personal associations are very important components to any business endeavor. Are you here just to troll for business or are you here to build your future and expand every facet you can maximize? You have to figure out what you want then do your best to get it. I want Cher to get what she wants because helping Cher helps me. It may not help me get in, but watching a buddy pierce the corporate veil has its own rewards. It helps differentiate you and what you do from someone else who may not be willing to do it. :-)

Are you looking to differentiate yourself? Then do so honestly. Write as honestly as you can about how you feel about anything and everything that interests you. Transparency doesn't mean telling all, it means telling enough. As you grow and find your voice your readers will grow with you. If you are really lucky, the right person will read your blog and open the door for you when you least expect it. If you fail, you may still have something relevant to say because sharing your hindsight after going through something may provide a viable solution for others. It all starts with a conversation...

It's a conversation you, the writer, have decided to have with other people. As long as you remember to take other people into consideration you will always have something to say. Some of the best moments I have had have been people writing blurbs about their day. What the cat killed. What the dog chewed up. How baby ran amuck in the fridge... I still get e-mail about Stephen toasting our cell phones (LOL). I'll have you know that the ritual sacrifice of electronics is alive and well in my household (LMAO). Yes. It's true. A Life With Wee People blog about the trials and tribulations suffered by my iPod Nanno is Overdue (ROTFL).

My point? Start by talking to people and not at them. The moment they start chatting back you will be talking with them. It is the with them connection you, as a writer, should always be striving for. Your ability to connect creates buzz. Nothing beats word of mouth buzz, especially when it goes viral in your favor. :-)

How writers talk with people affect how people perceive their brand.

To quote Garr Reynolds: "If you don't brand yourself, you can rest assured that others are branding you and letting others brand you can be risky business. Instead, we should have control, as much as we can, in determining our reputation, our image, and the intangibles, the ephemeral, and the perceptions and ideas that other people have about us."

Round one was mad fun, mad long (and to some, just plain maddening - LOL). Why does Wordy C get wordy? Because stuff needs to be said. Fluffy people don't read my wordy posts. The people who get me get the fact that I am really having a conversation with you. If you were sitting across the table from me would I stop talking at 300 words? We all know I would not, so why listen to people who b*tch about long posts? They obvious don't have as much to share with you. To each his own...

If you are intelligent enough to sit down and read a book, then my long posts in relation to the book suddenly become short (LOL). I share a lot because along the way I learn things... Like there are 4 Lies About Social Media you should be aware of (Thank you Penelope Trunk) and one should Beware Social Media Snake Oil (Thank you Stephen Baker) and it wouldn't hurt to know What Matters Now (Thank you Seth Godin).

Branding yourself isn't a casual thing. If you are really lucky, someone smarter than you may brand you in a moment of laughter that sticks and takes off with a life of its own. When Susan Mangigian gave me the affectionate nickname Wordy C, she was branding me. When everyone else started calling me that, I embraced it, accepted it, then started living up to the moniker because people have an expectation. They count on my playful misbehavior and they count on me getting serious when something serious needs to be done. The expectations of my friends, family and readers drive my blog. I have a growing relationship with them. I answer e-mail in public and private. I pick up the phone and call. I even called China. Have you?

What drives your blog? You need to know why you write... This really is not a rhetorical question or me having a facetious moment. This is me telling you that your motives have to be defined because our motives are a heavy influence over why we do all of the things that we do.

Since I want us all on the same page regarding what motivation is, I'm going to make a brief detour to Wikipedia: "Motivation is the activation or energization of goal-oriented behavior. Motivation may be intrinsic or extrinsic. The term is generally used for humans but, theoretically, it can also be used to describe the causes for animal behavior as well. This article refers to human motivation. According to various theories, motivation may be rooted in the basic need to minimize physical pain and maximize pleasure, or it may include specific needs such as eating and resting, or a desired object, hobby, goal, state of being, ideal, or it may be attributed to less-apparent reasons such as altruism, morality, or avoiding mortality." You can read the full article here.

If you want to be a stellar writer, then you need to read people who write because people who write consistently are motivated writers. I don't want you to hang out with people who teach you how to write. I want you to start hanging out with people who actually write.

Observing them teaches you how to observe yourself because we all emulate the people we admire on some level. We all strive for that intangible gift that they (motivated writers) have because those types of bloggers  pave the way for us to believe that if we keep trying we can do this, we can learn to express ourselves more effectively and use our interpersonal communication skills to grow our networks and businesses.

Do not stick with people who agree with what you agree with. You need balance in your blog life. The more propponents and opponents you read regarding a subject that interests you, the more you learn about yourself and discover what you did, do and don't agree with. Good writers bring clarity to a subject and can inspire you to opine...

Your opinions are going to affect your brand, so it also helps if you, the person creating your brand, is honest about why you want to brand yourself a particular way. Just because you want people to see you a particular way doesn't mean they actually do. Sometimes, the best brands are accidental by products of you simply being just you (LOL). Those are fun because they are usually created by word of mouth and viral buzz usually happens when the things people do and say are so noteworthy it resonates within others.

Along the way the people who read you learn things, just like I others and learn stuff... For instance:

(Observation #01) "It's a Recession when your neighbor loses his job. It's a Depression when you lose yours." Harry S. Truman

Hmm... (LOL) Very well said, Harry. People get it... they really get this. Even when they are laughing about something that makes them sad. Sometimes, a famous quote can color how you think about what you've just observed if the quote is on your mind while you are being made aware of something...

(Observation #02) "If a man does his best, what else is there?" General George S. Patton

Hmm... George reminds me of my Dad (LOL). We didn't have to be perfect, we just had to try our best and always say what we mean... We also had the prerogative to change our minds, and if we did it didn't automatically make us liars, it simply sometimes means we had evolved, learned something new and changed our minds... Other times more facts being revealed meant we were mistaken in our assessment of a situation. If you are the type of person willing to do your best, then what else is there? If you need to change your mind, then change it. Don't let people attack your position because you have the nerve and audacity to move on... What does it say about the blogger who screams a practitioner is a liar in order to make themselves look good? What does it say about your brand?

(Observation #03) "Political correctness is tyranny with manners." Charlton Heston

(ROTFL) Oh, the things I could say here, but wont. I'm gonna let Charlton speak for himself. ;-)

If not for the intellect of these three writers, they would never have excelled and been well known for anything. If you want to brand yourself then be honest about who you are, even in the face of great adversity... Let your blog stand on its own two digital feet and write about what ever you want and let your level of intelligence shine through. Let your humor loose. Let your irony loose. Let you fears, hopes and desires loose. Some people will not agree with this simply because they feel if you are in a particular network you should write a particular thing.

Why? Who is the blog writer of your post? You or them? It's YOUR blog. Simply sit down, get comfy and write about what ever you want to have a conversation about today. You are sharing. Sharing is personal. It ticks me off when people attack other writers because they think something shared is stupid. If you don't like it, move on or write your own post as to why you felt something was stupid without embarrassing a peer.

Now that your eyes are crossed I shall leave you with my fave two quotes regarding stupidity:

"Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former." Albert Einstein

"Nothing in the world is more dangerous than sincere ignorance and conscientious stupidity." Martin Luther King Jr.

My point? Everything is relative so write about what is important and relevant to you, then do your damnedest to get what you want out of life while you are still alive to live and enjoy it...
