Mobile Office 101

Carolyn Tann Starr 2011

Mobile Office 101

When you blog on the run like I do, it pays to have a mobile office that's compact and versatile. It doesn't matter if you are into Windows or Mac. What matters is that your equipment does what you want it to do when you need it to do it.

Carolyn Tann Starr 2011

It warmed up today (and actually rained) so the diffused lighting made my photo-shoot at the South Street Sea Port an interesting challenge. Working with a Nikon and Toshiba laptop I was able to capture and process my digital images on the fly in order to make snap decisions regarding the subject matter of my next gallery show.

I started sketching this view an hour ago. When I get back home I'm going to block it out on a canvass and start painting it for the wee people. I plan on turning it into a limited edition art poster when I am done. Inna Hardison of HA Media Group will be the print vendor on this project.

I'm looking forward to working with her firm. It's an excellent company and if you haven't subscribed to Inna's blog you may want to check it out here.

On my way into the studio to continue working on our next album. The best part about having a mobile office is  the fact  that I can set up and break down my gear just about anywhere. I can switch between chasing the Little Minions, Writing, Illustration, Photography, Video, Film, Music and Real Estate with the click of a mouse.

I can also lurk on your blogs and play in social media during break time (LOL). ;-)

The Cluetrain Manifesto

The Cluetrain Manifesto

The Cluetrain Manifesto is a must read. You can read the original book for free on-line here. If you want to buy the book because you like having them around to finger pages while settled into a comfy spot, you can get it on-line at Amazon.com here:

http://www.amazon.com/Cluetrain-Manifesto-Christopher-Locke/dp/0738202444

There are audio-book and CD options as well. Language: English (ISBN-10: 0738202444 and ISBN-13: 978-0738202440).

It's an oldie but goodie from the year 2000. What I found interesting is what they got right and what they missed the mark on regarding how the Internet was going to flip business practices on its ear. Sometimes yesterday's science fiction turns into today's truth. Remember Star Trek inspiring cell phones, CDs and DVDs, etc?

Here's a sample to flip your interest: Markets Are Conversations...

If chapter four doesn't make you want to read more, then MY BAD - ignore this blog post and keep doing business as usual (LOL). ;-)

Objective C PDF from Apple and other random musings...

Objective C PDF from Apple

I had to log in to get this PDF so I don't know if you have to also. I tend to log into all of my accounts and tab back and forth while working (and listening to music). iOS is something new for me to learn. I have no idea if I am ever going to do something as wonderful and elegant as the hard working programmers over at Apple, but I am having a lot of fun learning what makes their Objective C based products tick.

2011 is going to be my year of the visual...

I want to do something that takes my eye candy to a whole new level, like going mobile (LOL). ;-)

My second Kindle on PC purchase to that end is Learn Objective C on the Mac by authors Mark Dalrymple and Scott Knaster. Like I said regarding my previous purchase, Kindle for PC ROCKS! I am really looking forward to creating e-books, PDFs and phone apps.

Did you know if you become an established author on Amazon.com you can get a writer's blog over there? Ooooooooo... There's a method to chicka's madness, eh? (LOL).

Since I'm slowly building my official artist site as a musician on Amazon.com, I found myself thinking, "HMMMMMM... why not write there as well and build an Amazon writer's blog?"

I can tap my ActiveRain team blog for co-writers and we can publish a bunch of books. Yay! My fave editor, Candice D is the boss of me for this project. If you want to come out and play let me know.

Psssst... What ever the editor says goes... Seriously. ;-)

E-books, PDFs and other random musings...

http://www.time.com/time/specials/packages/article/0,28804,1918031_1918016_1918004,00.html

We made a bunch of interesting PDFs over the last three years. I am seriously considering publishing them on-line as a series. http://issuu.com is a very cool website that may be useful in this regard. The above link is to the Times.com review of their site. Tell me what you think of them after you poke around over there and peek at the publications using their services.

Now that I am fooling around with Kindle for PC I may have to take a peek at their requirements as well. Have you read Kindle for Free? It kinda got me thinking about tweaking some of my marketing habits to include free downloads that are measurable. :-)

I'm starting a colorful flow chart outline for my latest little programming project. I have to carefully document what I'm doing every step of the way or I'm going to get lost. When the kids wake up I'll have to stop of course so I gotta go while the getting is good. Will check in later after breakfast (if the wee people let me - LOL).

Just added my Twitter Tweet Button to my signature and sidebar...

Since I fool around in Twitter during the mornings while working with Jango Music, I thought it might be nice to have a twitter counter tweet button. It's kinda cool to see how many shares you get with the "share this" button and I found myself wondering how many of those shares were actual tweets.

Being a Curious George kinda girl I added the tweet button to see if it might help me figure that out. When you spend as much time marketing as I do you kinda like having an idea of which social media sites are useful (besides fun). :-)

This is going to be mad fun. Our next Life With Wee People project is to customize our Converse sneakers. My shorties are gonna be" Converse Cool" in a couple of weeks. I already started the one for "Ambassadors of Chaos" and can't wait to see what we come up with for "Life With Wee People" (LOL).

Go click on that link and see what they already have for base models, then brand your business people.

Have fun with it. I am (LOL). :-)

Social Media and the Great Personal Uploading

I love irony! My friend Paul is an amazing writer. Enjoy! :-)

Via Paul Slaybaugh, Scottsdale AZ Real Estate (Realty Executives):

We REALTORS are a narcissistic bunch.  A revelation, I know.  From the bus stop advertising that depicts an attentive agent fielding calls on a pink cell phone to the glamor shot of an agent with his toy poodles on a "For Sale" sign in front of an overshadowed house, the marketing realm is littered with examples of self-promotional prowess.  No one sells self like a house peddler.

Enter the explosion of blogging and social media.

What other profession would employ the usage of such tools to the extent that we do?  What other professional would flog a keyboard on a semi-weekly basis secure in the knowledge that the consumptive public was hanging on every innermost, poorly conjugated thought?

Yes, the posting of fresh content keeps the attention of the search engines, and drives more eyes to our websites.  Our respective blogrolls serve as a running commentary on how we approach business and market our properties: an ever-growing resume for prospective employers, if you will.  We provide handy tips and the latest market news from our primary coverage areas.  All sandwiched around odes to our pet bunny rabbits.  And journals of our kids' kindergarten adventures.  Speaking of sandwiches, don't forget our series devoted to the amateur critiquing of local eateries.

Where are the insurance agents?  Where are the divorce attorneys?  Where are all of the professionals that are not in some way affiliated with the Real Estate industry?

Consumers do not think about us except when they need something from us, and yet we continue to pour our hearts and souls into these virtual diaries under the misguided assumption that the public actually cares.  When someone needs a hammer, they shop for a hammer.  When someone needs a house, they shop for a house.

The guy with the hammers is satisfied with the sale.  The guy with the houses seeks a relationship.  The self-indulgent assumption on the part of the latter is that the purchase of a home is such a momentous milestone in one's life that any old professional just won't do.  Surely, an eager home buyer won't just call the number in a random property ad, right?  He will want an experienced champion of unassailable virtue and expertise to don armor and joust with sellers on his behalf.  He will want to know what his fledgling hero thinks of the current state of the market.  He will want to know where his knight in Real Estate armor is ... eating lunch?

We kid ourselves into thinking the social media craze is some new manifest destiny.  It is merely an extension of one's own indulgence.  As we agents tend to sell the amalgamation of our entire being as much as an actual service, it follows that we continue to pioneer new avenues of conceit.

Yes, I sell houses, but Internet 2.0 protocol mandates that I don't simply advertise my wares.  You must know what I thought of the latest Harry Potter installment, and where to take the kids to cool down on those hot summer days.  Surely the general public will not do business with someone until they learn his political and religious leanings, just as no one would think to employ a member of the service industry before reading up on his family trip to the Poconos.

Don't think my commentary on the absurdity of it all precludes me from being a willing participant in the shared delusion.  I will continue to unravel my own personal onion until there is nothing left.  No mystery left to discover. No unique perspective left to impart.  Only through full assimilation into the collective virtual mainframe does one realize his true social media potential.

Consider it Wikipedia for egomaniacs.

So while there are plenty of homes for sale on my website, I urge you, the reader, to keep following this blog. I have opinions about the career arc of Scott Baio that you need to know before determining whether I am the REALTOR for you.

Somebody hire this woman. Seriously... (LOL).

We are all piled up on my futon laughing like a bunch of lunatics. "Woman creatively quits job and burns bridges" is a hoot. I keep wondering who took the pictures (e.g. camera on a timer or really cool office friend - LOL). How much do you want to bet we see more of these start to crop up? :-)

Get Your Picture in the November Issue of Fast Company

My friend Josef was kind enough to make this available for a re-blog.

Via Josef Katz {Marketing Maestro} (Education Marketing and Direct Response Marketing):

Fast Company is doing something interesting with social media.  They have set up a site to determine who the most influential person is by tracking sign ups and pass alongs of your link.  Everyone that participates is supposedly going to get their picture in the November issue when they reveal the Most Influential Person.  How cool is that going to be to see your picture in the magazine?

Of course the size of your picture is going to be determined by the amount of influence you have so get cracking now.Josef Katz

Think about the promotional possibilities if you are the most influential person (although you probably wouldn’t need the PR if you are that influential.)

So, if you ever wondered about the value of social media why not give this a shot and see how influential you really are.  This won’t give you the true ROI of social media but will give you an indication of your reach and influence.

More importantly it could be fun to see some AR members in the November issue.

Have I influenced you?
