A Q&A on Facebook - Are you ready for this new bit of irritation?

I quote:

"What happens to my old group when it gets archived? When your old group gets archived, it will be converted to the new groups format. Almost everything from your old group will be available in the archived group, with a few exceptions. Things that will be available in the archived version include: Group photos and Wall posts Group discussion threads, which become Wall posts The group description, which can be found at the top of the page when you click "See All" members in the new group."

Things that will NOT be available in the archived version include: Recent news Group officer titles The info box under the old group picture The group network The members of your old group. You can still add new members by clicking "Add Friends to Group."

Psst... Facebook... I HATE being dragged into groups. What makes you think I'm going to sit there and drag people back into my friggin' group Club Chaos @ ActiveRain.com group? I have NEVER dragged a single person into any group on Facebook.

Feel free to rejoin when they whack our old groups guys. I am not dragging a single soul into the converted new format group. I can't even stand the thought of it. I really can't... I hate when people do it to me. I hate having to un-join stuff I didn't join.

Seriously...

Dear Facebook, why the hell can't I edit my FB contacts on my Droid?

Dear Facebook, why the hell can't I edit my FB contacts on my Droid?

I can't possibly be the only person asking this question. How dare you not have customer service??? You are data mining the personal and business information of over half a billion people, monitoring their private/public relationships and you don't have a dedicated customer service? WTF is up with that?

I've been clicking Facebook links for hours looking for someone to call. This makes no sense. What is the point of people importing their Facebook contacts if the apps can't allow them to be edited to update their cell phone numbers when they change? MOST OF MY FRIENDS HAVE MULTIPLE PHONES (e.g. cell, business, fax, home).

You are Facebook.

YOU ARE FACEBOOK.

Do you understand that we, your users, have a problem with that?

I would not be writing this blog post if you had a dedicated customer service division. What's wrong with you? Can't afford college interns?

If you had a few college interns I suspect I'd be on hold listening to elevator music instead of bitching in public about the latest bit of stupidity on your part. Do I have an official Facebook app or don't I? Inquiring minds want to know what your standards are because I already know what standards Apple has for people writing apps for the iPhone.

You are always out there spinning press about protecting the Facebook brand and this is what we get? No dedicated customer service? Users with Facebook apps should be able to edit their content. I am not happy about having to make duplicate entries in my phone just so I can speed dial a girlfriend. I now have to do this for 74 out of 762 contacts. That kinda sucks. Turns out if my FB peeps don't put a contact number on their profile I can't add one. I want to know why not???

If you have an iPhone and a Facebook app I would love to hear from you regarding this little issue I am having with my Android regarding my not being able to control updating a Facebook contact... Damn phone wants to stay in sync with outdated Facebook information and refuses to let me do this.

Who knew?

Why do I like PT? She's a fascinating read...

Why do I like PT? She's a fascinating read...

I need to answer some e-mail generated from this post.

If I don't un-flip my b*tch switch soon my sparkling aura of creativity is going to fizzle and die before I finish composing my next iTune... I am trying to do a YouTube over here so I'll make this mini-rant quick.

Point #1: There is a reason why I don't take anonymous comments on my blog any more. I FRIGGIN' HATE COMMENT SPAM. It's not because I want to limit criticism or discourse, I'm simply tired of the endless links to nowhere from hacks trying to get a free ride off of my SEO. I have better things to do than delete and report links to malicious scripts. Besides, I like all the fun e-mails I get (like yours - LOL).

Point #2: No one puts words in my mouth. I am chatty and catty enough to do so on my own.

Point #3: I endorse what I like for free because I REALLY REALLY LIKE IT.

Point #4: Everyone who hopped into paypal to buy Penelope Trunk's new limited edition sold out book (inspired by a conversation with her girlfriend Melissa) is getting an autographed copy. I am not special. I did not say that to act as if I was special. I said it because I am happy to be getting one. I am a bloody fan of the woman. Geez...

If you had the opportunity to follow the advice and adventures of a plain spoken person who routinely leaves herself vulnerable to attack while teaching you something useful from personal and business experience would you do it? I DID.

Unlike some of you hit and run flavor of the day twitter attention span readers who can't get past a controversial tweet, I actually spend a lot of time lurking on the websites of the writers I enjoy and will not un-subscribe or un-follow from them if they do something funky. My hanging around doesn't mean I agree with everything that a person says, it just means after 46 years of schlepping around on this planet I've learned to enjoy people for who they are and what they bring to the table.

You want to know what I get out of it? Read. My. Lips.

(a) A self directed person suffering from Asperger syndrome who is determined to be responsible for her future. My 9 year old suffers from Autism. My 5 year old suffers from PDD-NOS. They have speech delays so I can't always find out what it is like to have their minds lock down. Because of Penelope Trunk I know what it's like.

(b) Penelope Trunk will believe in herself when others do not. I want my kids to be self-nurturing too.

(c) Penelope Trunk is action oriented - chicka will carry an idea from thought into reality. I love that. I get that. I can pull music and art out of my head. My kids are following in my footsteps in that regard and I let them manage my artistic career. The shorties are the boss of me. They even think they're friggin' Realtors and expect to be working in the family business.

You think PT sucks? Seriously? You're trying to "save me" by suggesting a better caliber of writer because I tweet the Harvard Business Review and Jango Music?

I should be linking to Harvard and not P?

Oh really?

Did you think I'd let you fire off your little prissy electronic missive without a friggin' answer? DID YOU?

Are you still waiting for me to respond to your offer to mentor my writing? Good. I'll send you this link. I have three mentors. No thank you.

I can do an entire outline of the alphabet and still have a list of relevant NICE stuff left over to say about P longer than my toilet paper roll. This is social media where we all live a virtual life. None of us are perfect. The mistake you have made with me is that you failed to realize that I am a transparent writer. I say what I think. I say what I mean. I do NOT link for brownie points. I frequently answer my e-mail in public AND I HAVE LOTS OF ISSUES but kissing ass isn't one of them. I earned the nickname Wordy C. The only ass I have to kiss is my hubby's (LOL).

You have no idea how offended I am with your arrogance... So what if I've only been writing since 2008. You obviously don't read me because you have no idea who I really am, what I have done and what I am capable of doing.

You have pushed my virtual buttons. I am seething...

Thank you for inspiring me to write about Penelope.

Blog post therapy done.

I woke up this morning with a box of 404 Likes on my Facebook profile page. Make it go away...

I woke up this morning with a box of 404 Likes on my Facebook profile page. Make it go away...

So... did Facebook make the August 23rd "we are no longer supporting boxes" decree so they could add personal information to our profile pages we don't want prominently displayed there? What the heck is wrong with them? Why are we constantly struggling to opt out of features they force us to opt into?

I did not ask for a "Likes" box to replace my Mafia Wars spot.

How dare you dump our HTML widgets spots of what we wanted to specifically share so you could implement exposing everyone's likes...

I dislike your LIKES box and want instructions on how to make it go away since I DON'T LIKE IT...

Anyone know how to do this feel free to post the instructions here...

Seeing that really flipped my b*tch switch this morning... Just because I like something doesn't mean I automatically want to prominently endorse it to all of my personal and business connections. I do not "like" things with equal intensity and only endorse the people, places and things that I love.

Pissing off consumers is not how you improve a social media website. If your goal is to monetize it, you should be more careful with how you aggregate and expose our collective information. Just because I "liked" one post written by a writer doesn't mean I like their entire blog.

Maybe you should make a separate subscribe button so you can understand the difference between us liking a single post as opposed to us liking an entire blog. Even people who don't like me share what I write once in a while because they found it useful on a specific occasion.

I want that box off of my profile page. Seriously...

UPDATE with Lori's help: Click the little edit pencil, then change the setting to "only me" at the bottom of  the new page that opens up across from the little edit pencil. Poof be visibility by others gone. :-)

RANT: Evil is having your spouse wipe the drive and not save your pictures...

Evil is having your spouse wipe the drive and not save your pictures...

I thought my fabulous four year old was the one I had to watch out for when it came to the family's electronics. Mikey just got added to the list. I have to cancel my morning, line up my simm cards and reload over 8,000 pictures Oh my word... the number may be closer to 10K... I have a lot of simm cards and shorty flushed a few... (sigh).

Men... (big SIGH)

I may have to go upstate and relax with my God-brother Joe after this F11 accident. Why do function keys temp so many people to just wipe it all out and start over if the machine starts to slow down during gaming? (Yes, it's true, I was wiped for a friggin' game - LOL) Then he goes, "I'm thinking of buying a new computer. I want you to look at these two (Dell versus Gateway) and tell me what you think."

Hmm... It is dangerous to ask the opinion of a witchy woman on the war path.

My answer? Buy a Sony, HP or a Toshiba. You are not a student. You are a gamer. You need more capacity and I am biased so you should never ask me because I will always chase a Sony, HP or a Toshiba. If you really want to make MY day BUY an APPLE MAC with a really big screen...

I wish I had a camera for the look on his face. It was priceless. I ruined his research speech (LMAO).

I love Apple. I really, really do. I will not repent from being a witchy woman... I have to live with what ever he buys, so I wanna Mac, I wanna Mac, I wanna Mac...

BTW, I have a Mac. I love my Mac Cube. I know it's old but I refuse to give it up. It's a MAC. It runs Adobe, Digital Performer and Final Cut Pro. I get my geek on with my Mac. Seriously geeky, but I digress... (LOL) ;-)

Was that really not helpful for the hubby? Yeah... I'm the unhelpful chick with a flipped b*tch switch this morning who has no problem disclosing her bias and being cranky about her missing work (LOL). We lost the sticker for my Microsoft Office (did I mention the fabulous four year old?) so I had to download the 2010 Beta until I find a number of someone who can look up my purchase history and give me a serial number for my software.

I'm gonna go get some Frosted Flakes and herd my crazy kids into the shower so they can go to school. I have to edit the rest of my film so you guys can see Lenn, Patti and SarahGray cooking. I really enjoyed their cooking and have been hoarding all sorts of images that need to see the light of day. :-)

Will be blogging live from Pawling, New York tomorrow. I feel an ActiveRain road trip coming on. I will try to find something interesting to show you from my next invasion of a state near you. I have to go mumble something amusing and sarcastic while I become the upload queen until it is time to leave.

Did I mention over 8,000 pictures have to be put back? How about the fact that doesn't include 3 years worth of digital film clips... (sigh). We will not talk about the missing music files. My virtual head might explode (LOL). Thank goodness I left my laptop at my gal pal's house last night. Who knows what the boys may have gotten into while I was out working.

Oh well... nothing beats a trip down memory lane. Maybe I should do my version of the Wordy C way back machine (LOL). This might turn out to be fun. Let's see where our virtual life takes us today. I shall spoof on the hubby and wee people later.

Sugar and tea awaits me... I have got to buy some Hagen Daz. Seriously...

Blog post therapy done. :-)

Dear Oldies and Newbies: I Want To Help But I Don't Know How... Maybe You Should Help Yourselves.

Carolyn Tann-Starr 2009

Dear Oldies and Newbies: I Want To Help But I Don't Know How... Maybe You Should Help Yourselves.

I remember bragging about you guys like a proud Mama while I was in Albany visiting with a handful of people who help create our laws. I remember introducing them to some of the more tempered political writers on ActiveRain (like Big Mike Saunders) while explaining to some very important people that the groups we create in this forum go so much further than simply trolling for real estate industry business. I told them if people want to know what we think about anything they can ask us directly or read our blogs and cull an impression to help them make a decision if they were ever looking from input from their constituents from across the nation. After all, our members are in every state and when I got invited I was invited to attend a hearing as a person, not as a lobbyist.

Some of those people who make some of our laws actually read me so I am still involved in a fringe sort of way. I pick up the phone and call. I send e-mail. I attend events. It's almost 180 miles one way, so my gas, tolls and time matter to me. I go because people discover us in Google daily and make random decisions regarding access and availability. I also go because I have branded my group and believe in the relationships and talents of the people writing there.

They don't just read me, they read you as well... silently watching while we periodically help each other or virtually slit our digital throats.

Let the "slit our digital throats" be your fair warning... Wordy C is kinda pissed so we have a lot to chat about.

Obviously, this post isn't for everyone, but it is for a handful of people who need to take a step back and stop long enough to calm down and think about what they are doing. A few of you are going too far with some of your trigger happy comments and if you can't figure it out for yourselves I don't know how to help you. I can not be your conscious and I am not qualified or inclined to quell your personal passions. You are going to have to learn to do that on your own. Some of you are going to learn the hard way... Having graduated from the school of hard knocks and earning my diploma in survival I have no problem stepping aside and letting you do things your way. I am, however, going to have my say because there are things that I need to lay to rest before I let you have lots of rope to hang yourself with.

If you are wondering why the answer is very simple: so I can have peace. Sometimes, when people hang themselves they finally learn a useful lesson after the spanking. While sharing your opinions with others, some of you periodically appear not to care beyond your own gratification. You will learn that those of us who watch, wait and habitually listen may say nothing at first but may eventually one day say something later on... That day has come. It may come again. It may also be your turn to do what I am about to do when you decide to step in and try to stop good people from harming themselves. I have discovered that if people are not saved the way they imagined their answers should come they sometimes make a great production of drowning in their anger while passing the blame off to you. "You could have helped me but you didn't." "You could have stopped this but you didn't."

Did I miss the part about, "I never should have posted that _____?" I am still waiting for that conversation to happen, but alas it is not to be... Why is it so hard for people to realize some things were just not meant to be posted in anger? Been there, done that, can say it from experience and observation of others folly.

Discernment is a personal perception that you either have or you don't... This means some of you will decide that I shall fail with this conversation before I even start listing the issues at hand because you will believe that I am talking about everyone else except for you. Want to stop reading now to b*tch about my arrogance, hubris and knack for writing long posts? Feel free to leave and learn nothing. I just provided you with your limited attention span an excuse to move on.

The measure you have and how much you make use of it is entirely in your own hands. Still here? Good. That means you are curious and want to see where this is going. Will I do 300, 500, 750 or 1000 words? I don't know. I guess you'll just have to stick around and find out how long it takes me to get to the punch line...

Two people in a digital room means two opinions on a matter and if you are a last word person or a reactionary responder you will be out maneuvered because the thing you focus on is not the issue at hand but the mannerisms affecting its delivery. If you realize it is okay to agree to disagree and move on if you have to you will fare very well. If you don't, human nature, statistics and trends point towards a person launching an attack because it is always tempting defend in the offensive if the option is available. I've tested that out during 15.75 years of working with male maximum security inmates on Ryker's Island. When people are upset sometimes the delivery matters more than the message.

Poor delivery can trigger unintended consequences. You either are going to hone your interpersonal communications skills or you are not. My very life depended upon my ability to negotiate a meeting of the minds with very difficult people so my assumption (I know I really ought not to assume here - LOL) is that if I remind people who make their living negotiating of the fact the very people who hire them are watching some of their comments disintegrate beyond repair, maybe a few will behave better next time rather than stoop to continuing to play stupidity limbo on a blog post.

It says a lot about you when you attack people who don't deserve to come under fire. It also says a lot about you how you counter people who do deserve to be spanked. If I curse, do you really need to curse back? If you curse, does that make my profanity a given? We all can irk each other expressing our personal beliefs with and without profanity (BTW, I use profanity, so don't get confused - LOL). I say and ask this because people like me may rant in public and/or private when it really matters to us (and/or we are feeling strong emotional ebbs) but at some point we learn to curb our anger urges because we actually care about the people who read us.

If I am going to b*tch I want it to be for a really good cause. "Good" is relative. So is "best." If I ask you as a blogging buddy to try and be on your best behavior because the whole world is watching, would you pause in your political rantings and barbed comments to do so?

(1) Do not name politicians of the opposing party you espouse to despise in connection with possible defamatory, libelous and slanderous speech. Lots of people have Google alerts and I am amazed at the brazen things some of you say as if you have impunity or will not be found out. Lets go to Wikipedia for a quote because some of you need to get this wee bit of an idea that slander, libel and defamation is a big no-no into your heads:

"Defamation—also called calumny, vilification, slander (for transitory statements), and libel (for written, broadcast, or otherwise published words)—is the communication of a statement that makes a claim, expressly stated or implied to be factual, that may give an individual, business, product, group, government, or nation a negative image. It is usually, but not always, [1] a requirement that this claim be false and that the publication is communicated to someone other than the person defamed (the claimant). In common law jurisdictions, slander refers to a malicious, false and defamatory spoken statement or report, while libel refers to any other form of communication such as written words or images. Most jurisdictions allow legal actions, civil and/or criminal, to deter various kinds of defamation and retaliate against groundless criticism. Related to defamation is public disclosure of private facts, which arises where one person reveals information that is not of public concern, and the release of which would offend a reasonable person. "Unlike [with] libel, truth is not a defense for invasion of privacy."[2] False light laws are "intended primarily to protect the plaintiff's mental or emotional well-being."[3] If a publication of information is false, then a tort of defamation might have occurred. If that communication is not technically false but is still misleading, then a tort of false light might have occurred.[3] In most civil law jurisdictions, defamation is dealt with as a crime rather than a tort.[4]"

(2) Public officials have equal protection under the law and can sue people as an individual person wronged. BTW, bloggers are not the press. You do not have freedom of the press and you do not have the right to attack members of the public or members in this forum because they hold opposing political beliefs and views. I noticed several of you think you can say what ever you want because you believe you are engaged in a political debate. What I have been reading has nothing to do with any form of debate and more to do with spewing venom. Lets go to Wikipedia for a quote so the newbies can actually base the concept of debate on something other than the piss poor thinly veiled attacks I am reading and getting really bent out of shape about in my group.

"Debate or debating is a formal method of interactive and representational argument. Debate is a broader form of argument than logical argument, which only examines consistency from axiom, and factual argument, which only examines what is or isn't the case or rhetoric which is a technique of persuasion. Though logical consistency, factual accuracy and some degree of emotional appeal to the audience are important elements of the art of persuasion, in debating, one side often prevails over the other side by presenting a superior "context" and/or framework of the issue, which is far more subtle and strategic. In a formal debating contest, there are rules for people to discuss and decide on differences, within a framework defining how they will interact. Informal debate is a common occurrence, the quality and depth of a debate improves with knowledge and skill of its participants as debaters. Deliberative bodies such as parliaments, legislative assemblies, and meetings of all sorts engage in debates. The outcome of a debate may be decided by audience vote, by judges, or by some combination of the two. Although this implies that facts are based on consensus, which is not factual. Formal debates between candidates for elected office, such as the leaders debates and the U.S. presidential election debates, are common in democracies. The major goal of the study of debate as a method or art is to develop one's ability to play from either position with equal ease. To inexperienced debaters, some propositions appear easier to defend or to destroy; to experienced debaters, any proposition can be defended or destroyed after the same amount of preparation time, usually quite short. Lawyers argue forcefully on behalf of their client, even if the facts appear against them. However one large misconception about debate is that it is all about strong beliefs; it is not."

(3) An on-going investigation is not the completed investigation.

The point I am trying to make is you have to control your reactions before words typed or spoken in anger place you in a position you never should be trapped in through using an unfortunate choice of words published in social media. Reading some of your comments have me going WTF???

I will call a spade a spade at the drop of a dime and if your personal politics can trigger the stupidity limbo in your comment sections because you find an opposing views intolerable, suck at the art of persuasion, don't give a fart about the issues at hand and think it is a bloodsport to ruin another writer's post I am going to make every attorney girlfriend I know start blogging here.

Stick with the community guidelines, hone your interpersonal communication skills and stop attacking people in the forum. You do not have the right to attack members and certainly do not have the right to drag poor newbies under the virtual bus because some of them think it is okay to repeat what you say and follow in your ignorant footsteps.

Anything worth doing is worth doing correctly. Some of you owe others of you apologies and need to go edit yourselves. People know the difference between a difference of opinion and an attack. The blogosphere and our friends at home and abroad are watching. If you can't have consideration for yourselves, have some for the readers. I very rarely enter the political post arena but enough is enough. People can get hurt by the inappropriate squabbling some of you habitually engage in.

My rant of caution is done. Beware the length of your digital rope...

Dear Facebook: Where is Starbucks and the Outside Blog Minion Report?

Dear Facebook: Where is Starbucks and the Outside Blog Minion Report?

I did not delete my business fan page for the Outside Blog Minion Report but it has disappeared. Now I have to go check on the other ones and my widgets are down showing no one is connected there. I also can't find the Starbucks fan page so I know it's something on your end and not my end. I work really hard on my little blogs and as a customer I am not happy with your silence.

I can not run an ad campaign if I do not have  the specific fan page to advertise. If there is an issue, you should tell us so millions of people don't wonder over the thousands of conversations going on right now about how stuff appears to be deleted/missing/problem loading page error coded on the Facebook site but shows up in the search engines as still being out there in cyberspace available to select. I'm clicking links to nowhere here. I AM NOT HAPPY!

You gave us a broadcast banner when you upgraded to the new home page but are very quiet about how that upgrade has got fan pages winking out like dead stars all over the Internet. I WANT MY BUSINESS FAN PAGE FOR THE OUTSIDE BLOG MINION REPORT BACK WHERE IT BELONGS. I sent you a brief e-mail to info@facebook.com. Do you have staff to handle this? I wrote this post because they appear to be ignoring me (or overwhelmed with inquiries maybe?)...

Please do not ignore the writers who hang out and play on your website. We're users. We have cyberlives. We like living them...

It is very upsetting when our virtual homes abruptly disappear without warning and when we try to find out why we discover you appear not to give a damn. You gave a damn about telling us about your new look. You should also give a damn about our missing fan pages. I know you guys have great growth. Kudos and congrats for all of us users who like you, however, there are paying customers who are paying for advertisements on your website who have missing fan pages us fans can't access. I can't get my own to show up and I can't find Starbucks... Growth is not a good thing if you don't tell us why stuff is missing when we report it to you and ask you to please fix it. Your numbers wont help me if I decide to run an ad to reach people and my business fan page (with my fans) is gone.

BTW, my widgets embedded on the websites that I pay for no longer work for my missing fan page. Please put the Outside Blog Minion Report back where it belongs so my peeps can stop asking me why I deleted something that I did not delete. Thank you.

Update: 164 Starbucks pages and counting but mine is still gone. It's been deleted from the Fan Page directory.
